General Description

The unique property of talc is its softness (1 on the MoH scale of hardness). When pure it has a composition of 63.36% SiO2, 31.89% MgO are commonly referred to as Soapstone.

Physical Properties

Colour: A high grade talc, in general should be pure-white, low in lime and iron, free from grit and specks or impurities and finely ground (200 mesh or finer). A good “slip” (greasy feel) may or may not be desired. This grade of talc is mainly used by the toilet powder and fertiliser trade.

Grading: Generally industrial grades are standardised by the proportion which passes through 400 mesh 100%. The fineness depends very much on the consumer’s requirements.

USES

The commonest among the multitude of applications for talc are in the following industries: paper, plastics, rubber, textiles, pesticides and fertilisers, roofing, refractories, ceramics, cosmetics and pharmaceutical. Other miscellaneous uses include carpet backing, lubrication, cereal polishing, floor and shoe polish, printing inks, chalks, welding rods, putties and caulks.
