RCF STOCK FEED LIME

Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)

General Description

Limestones are rock deposits of either primary or secondary origin. They consist essentially of Calcium Carbonate or of a mixture of the carbonates of calcium and magnesium. When 10-20% of magnesium carbonate is present, the rock is referred to as ‘Dolomite’ or ‘magnesium limestone’. If the quantity of magnesium is above 20%, the rock is designated ‘High magnesium limestone’ and if the amount approaches 45%, the rock is then virtually a pure Dolomite and is then regarded as a distinct mineral composed of calcium and magnesium carbonates. Limestones, therefore vary considerably in composition and this affects the use to which they can be put. In addition to the calcium and magnesium carbonates, impurities are often present. These being clay, silica, iron, sulphur and manganese.

Physical Properties

Grading

Hardness: 3.0

Gravity: 2.71 to 2.72

Melting point: at about 8250c it decomposes giving off CO leaving CaO or lime which melts at about 25700c.

Index of refraction: 1.486 to 1.258

Colour: To nearly Black, Steak White Luster, vitreous to dull and earthy

Cleaverage: Perfect rombohedral (Sat about 1050c to 2750c in crystals. Fracture varies dependent upon structure.

Transparency: transparent to opaque

Tenacity: Brittle. Perfectly transparent crystals show high double refraction. Twinning in crystal is common.

Calcite and other forms of calcium carbonate can always be easily recognised by a hardness of 3 and their easy solubility with brisk effervescence in cold dilute acids, properties possessed by no other non-minerals resembling calcite.

Application

Used as a source of Calcium in the manufacture of Stock Feed for animals.

benefits of rcf stock feed lime

As calcium is not naturally produced by animals, feed lime is an essential food supplement suitable for all types of livestock. Animals require calcium to promote optimal growth, thereby enhancing productivity. Feed lime is the most cost effective simple way of enhancing nutritional value and associated productivity.

The advantages of supplementing livestock feed with premium quality RCF feed lime products are:

  • The promotion of milk production in dairy herds
  • The development of healthy bone growth in young animals
  • Improved heart function, nerve and muscle strength in livestock
  • Increased strength of egg shells in poultry and ostrich industry
  • Poultry grit in the gizzard aids digestion and associated weight gain
